Arts and Sculpture
Last updated on 18 May 2023
The arts and sculpture are firmly ingrained in Sri Lanka's ancient history because it served as the hub of trade between the West and the East. By passing on a large portion of their cultures and customs, India and China have helped to maintain the vibrancy of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage. Traditional Sri Lankan arts and sculpture were influenced by Buddhism, which was introduced in the third century and supported numerous aesthetic styles derived from religious beliefs through paintings, sculptures, architecture, and more. Buddha statues made of limestone and granite were sculpted as a result of Buddhism's influence on art and craft. Sri Lankan paintings were influenced by the themes of many Buddha life stories that can be seen in Buddhist monasteries and shrines.
